Fly away
This week I am thinking about unity and geese.
You’re probably thinking, did she mean to say “geese” just then? Surely she didn't mean to say geese.
Yes.
Yes, she did.
Here’s a story I heard from my dear friend Martha Hayhurst years ago on our way back to the Compass Buckhead office in Atlanta after a gluttonous breakfast of griddle cakes and cheese grits at OK Café.
When geese fly in formation, they honk to cheer the lead goose on. When the lead goose gets tired, they drop back to the end of the line, and a new lead goose flaps up to be the center of the V.
When a goose falls out of the formation for any reason, whether they got shot down or are otherwise incapacitated, two geese come out of the formation and fly down to the ground with their fallen team member.
Those two geese will stay by the injured goose’s side until they die or fly.
Then, whether they have become a duo or remain a trio, they catch up to their squad side-by-side.
Even when they’re at a disadvantage, no goose is left alone.
So.
How are you the goose you need to be this week?
